Gopass guide: where it works, what the card and app do, and whether you need to queue

The key to Gopass is not the plastic card itself. It is a system that lets you buy tickets and services for multiple mountain resorts, lifts, ski areas, water parks and other attractions from one account. For hikers, the most important distinction is this: in Slovakia, Czechia and Poland, a QR code received after purchase is often enough for pedestrian lift tickets, while skiing generally requires a physical chip card.
Buy your ticket in advance on the website or in the app and you can usually skip the ticket counter.
At mountain resorts in Slovakia, Czechia and Poland, pedestrian lift tickets can often be used directly as a QR code.
The chip card opens the turnstile; the digital card in the app does not replace it for skiing.
It has a one-off fee, is personal and reusable. According to the official information, it is not refundable.
- Create an accountRegister for Gopass on the website or in the app.
- Choose the resort and ticketLift tickets, ski passes, water-park tickets and other experiences are sold as separate products.
- QR code or chip cardFor pedestrian lift rides, a QR code is often enough; skiing requires a chip card.
- Go straight to access controlWith an online ticket, you can usually skip the ticket-office queue.
More than a ski-pass card: it is a ticketing and loyalty system
One account for several types of service
Gopass combines a website, mobile app, digital identification and, in some cases, a physical chip card.
After registering for Gopass, you can buy tickets and services, see your purchases in one place, identify yourself with the digital Gopass on your phone for some services, and load ski passes onto the physical chip card when skiing.
The most important point: “Gopass” is not one specific type of ticket. You always buy a product for a particular resort, date and service.
The system operates in four main countries, but the available services differ by resort
Major Gopass locations
For hikers, the mountain resorts and lifts are the most relevant.| Country | Major locations | What can it be used for? |
|---|---|---|
| Slovakia | Jasná, Tatranská Lomnica, Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec; Tatralandia, Bešeňová | Lifts, skiing, water parks and additional services. |
| Czechia | Špindlerův Mlýn, Ještěd and several golf resorts | Mountain tickets, skiing, golf and related services. |
| Poland | Szczyrk Mountain Resort, Legendia | Skiing and mountain services, plus an amusement park. |
| Austria | Mölltaler Gletscher, Muttereralm Innsbruck | Lifts, skiing and selected mountain products. |
Gopass’s current official FAQ also mentions additional partner ski resorts in Austria and Italy beyond the four main countries. For Italy, always check the specific resort and product page instead of assuming that every Gopass function is automatically available there.
As a hiker, you often do not need a plastic card — for skiing, you do
This is the part that causes the most confusion
There are three separate things: the digital Gopass, the QR code received after purchase, and the physical chip card.| What do you use? | When is it enough? | When is it not enough? |
|---|---|---|
| QR code after buying a ticket | For pedestrian lift tickets at mountain resorts in Slovakia, Czechia and Poland. | It is not the main carrier for ski passes. |
| Digital Gopass on your phone | For identification and, depending on the service, access or discounts. | By itself, it does not replace the chip card at mountain turnstiles. |
| Physical Gopass chip card | For skiing, selected hotel packages and Austrian lift tickets. | Often unnecessary for pedestrian lift rides in Slovakia, Czechia and Poland. |
The physical Gopass card is personal and non-transferable. Its official one-off fee is currently EUR 3 / CZK 75 / PLN 15. It is not a deposit card: you do not have to return it, and you cannot simply hand it back for a refund. Keep it, because it can be reused for future purchases.
How the process works if you want to use a lift as a hiker
The easiest option: buy online in advance
You do not need to start your visit by filling in details and buying at a ticket office.- Create a Gopass accountEnter your basic details, then use the same account on the website and in the app.
- Choose the resortFor example Tatranská Lomnica, Štrbské Pleso, Jasná or Szczyrk.
- Choose the right ticketCheck whether it is one-way or return, which lift section it covers, and whether it has a fixed time slot.
- Assign it to the correct personTickets are tied to a person; family members can also be managed from your account.
- Pay onlineThe confirmation and ticket information needed for use appear in your account and are also sent by email.
- If you have a QR-code pedestrian ticket, go to access controlIn Slovakia, Czechia and Poland, the QR code for a pedestrian lift ticket can be used directly from your phone.
- If you need a chip card, collect it the first timeA new card purchased online can be collected at a Client Centre or a Gopass Ticket self-service point where available.
According to Gopass, loading a purchased product onto a chip card can take around 0–15 minutes. If the gate does not open immediately after purchase, the card is not necessarily faulty.
You can avoid the ticket-office queue, but not necessarily the line for the lift itself
Gopass does not automatically mean priority access
Buying online and having Fast Pass are two different things.
In other words: when Gopass says you do not need to queue at the ticket office, it does not mean you can automatically overtake everyone waiting for a busy gondola on a weekend.
If you have not bought a Gopass ticket in advance, you need to use the on-site sales options available at that resort. This can mean buying at a ticket office or machine and possibly waiting, and the online price or Gopass-member benefits may not apply.
Not just ticket purchases: you can manage much of your trip from one place
The same account works across several countries and resorts
The app content can be tailored to the resort you select. You can use the same Gopass account in the four main countries — Slovakia, Czechia, Poland and Austria. The services available for purchase vary by country and resort.
Gopass is not a fixed discount card: online pricing and cashback can work together
There are two main ways you may save
One is the online/member price; the other is goX cashback that can be spent later.| Benefit | How does it work? |
|---|---|
| Online / member price | Gopass may offer registered members lower or best available prices for ski passes, water-park tickets and other products. Prices can also depend on the date and availability. |
| goX cashback | Eligible purchases may return around 1.5–5% in goX depending on your spending level. |
| Accommodation | For Gopass/TMR Hotels online bookings, a separate 5% online accommodation cashback plus an additional level-based cashback may apply, so in some cases the total can reach up to 10% in goX. |
goX is not ordinary bank-account money. It is a payment balance within Gopass that can be used for eligible products and services.
Euro-denominated goX can be used in Slovakia and Austria, CZK balances in Czechia, and PLN balances in Poland. These balances are not freely interchangeable currencies.
Not every purchase earns cashback. External partner resorts and some promotional or discounted products may be excluded, and cashback cannot be claimed retroactively for a purchase where you did not identify yourself with your Gopass account or card.
The most important practical answers before you go
Things you should not have to figure out at the resort
Short answers to the most common questions.| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can I use a lift without Gopass? | Where on-site ticket sales are available, yes: you can buy a ticket at the resort’s sales point. In that case, expect a ticket-office or machine purchase and possible waiting, and online benefits may not apply. |
| Do hikers need a plastic card? | At mountain resorts in Slovakia, Czechia and Poland, the QR code received after purchase can be used for pedestrian lift tickets. Skiing requires a chip card. |
| Is a QR code enough in Austria? | Gopass’s official FAQ states that a physical Gopass keycard is required for Austrian lift tickets. |
| Do I have to return the card? | No. The card has a one-off fee, is personal, reusable and non-refundable. |
| Do I need a new card every time? | No. Once your existing card is linked to your account, new entitlements can be loaded onto it later. |
| Does the Gopass card on my phone open the ski gate? | No. The digital Gopass is useful for identification, but skiing through mountain turnstiles requires the physical chip card. |
| Does buying online guarantee no queue at all? | You can usually avoid the ticket-office queue, but there can still be waiting at the lift boarding area during busy periods. |
| Do I need to print the confirmation? | No. According to the official FAQ, showing the confirmation on your phone is sufficient. |
| Can I buy a ticket on the same day? | Yes, most services can be purchased on the day, although there are exceptions and products with limited capacity. |
| What if the ticket has a fixed time? | For capacity-limited lifts such as the cable car to Lomnický štít, the stated time slot is especially important. |
“If I have the Gopass app, I can just show my phone everywhere and that is enough.”
No. A QR code is often enough for pedestrian lift tickets, but skiing and some Austrian lift tickets require a physical chip card.
Account → online ticket → QR code or chip card → go straight to access control.
If you buy in advance, you can usually avoid waiting at the ticket office and are more likely to get the better online price.
